We're in a phase where AI-assisted programming is everywhere; diffs fly by, code ships sooner, everyone's excited about the possibilities. In low-stakes side projects, it works. But the second you go distributed, different teams, legacy code, multi-cloud you're deep in the trenches. That "vibe coding" energy from quick hacks doesn't cut it anymore.
Here's what I keep seeing:
Legacy builds up, fast. It's easy to push an MVP, but maintaining multiple systems with different workflows means version drift and duplicated logic sneak in immediately.
Debugging gets nasty. If the AI wrote half the code, and nobody reviewed the output, you're stuck reverse-engineering mystery implementations. You lose flow, and the “ownership” of the codebase disappears.
Security's a moving target. AI loves introducing hidden vulnerabilities and dependency risks even when it looks secure. Distributed teams need shared guardrails, manual and automated.
Technical debt triggered by fast-moving AI integration is real, especially when distributed teams are involved. The best teams I've worked with use containerized workflows, rigorous CI/CD, and lean hard into automation, not just for deployment, but for code review and governance too.
On a good day, these tools empower everyone. Engineers jump in, experiment, move quickly. On a bad day, it feels like fighting against mystery logic with no ownership.
With the right boundaries, AI can empower teams and unlock creativity. But scaling means doubling down on ownership and review, so the pace keeps up.
My take: scale boldly, but take responsibility for every line. AI is a tool, not a teammate. Don't let “vibe” kill velocity.
